Giving
to community agencies aimed at breaking the "cycle of child
abuse"
The
Child Abuse Prevention Foundation proudly supports local programs
that share in our mission to break the cycle of child abuse in
the San Diego community. This article demonstrates how these programs
fit into our mission and the overall vision of keeping children
safe today and in the future. During April, Child Abuse Awareness
Month, CAPF awarded nine grants totaling more than $70,000 to
San Diego-based programs. This figure represents an increase from
the $50,000 granted this time last year.
Prevention
The
Chadwick Center at Children's Hospital received $19,554 for the
Parent SING (Social Interaction & Networking Group) program
to provide bi-monthly support groups for high-risk parents in
the National City area. The Friends of Vista Hill Foundation received
$10,000 for their ParentCare program to prevent abuse in the homes
of pregnant and parenting substance abusers. San Diego Youth &
Community Services received $10,000 for The Bridge and Gatehouse,
temporary shelters in the East County housing young people awaiting
foster care or other long-term placement.
Just in time for summer, Royal Family Kids Camp and Lions Camp
Jack received grants of $7,000 and $7,500 to provide foster children
throughout San Diego County with a memorable summer camping, educational
and outdoor experience.
Education
Two
North County-based agencies, St. Claire's Home Inc. and Straight
from the Heart received grants for their programs. St. Claire's
Home Inc., an organization dedicated to meeting the needs of abused
children and mothers, received $10,000 to enhance services delivered
to youth at their Little Angels Learning Center in Escondido.
Straight from the Heart, a Resource Center and Thrift Store in
North County supporting foster families, received $5,000 to support
their new training and education center in San Marcos.
Advocacy
Voices
for Children received $10,000 to expand its Court Appointed Special
Advocate Mentor program advocating for children in the dependency
system. The San Diego County District Attorney's Office received
$5,000 for the "Protecting Children Online" Campaign
to make parents throughout San Diego aware of the dangers their
children may be exposed to on the Internet.
Funding
Funding is the foundation that enables the Child Abuse Prevention
Foundation to continue providing the grants for the delivery of
critical program services aimed at breaking the cycle of child
abuse through prevention, education and advocacy. Thanks to our
many generous donors - from local Brownie Troops providing items
for kids at Polinsky Children's center to estate bequests, CAPF
has been at the forefront of the fight against child maltreatment
in San Diego for the past 21 years.
