CAPF Guardian Scholars supports ambitious former foster youth in their efforts to gain a university, community college or vocational school education. The goal is to provide each student with personalized support in areas such as academic advising, housing, and mentoring.
Emancipated foster youth have unique needs that most adults are unaware of because of their challenging life experiences and their lack of a supportive family structure. These life challenges are often insurmountable without adult mentoring, educational opportunities, financial support and caring role models.National statistics demonstrate poor future outcomes for foster youth. According to a study by University of Wisconsin on former foster children:
-
50% of youth leaving foster care as adults are unemployed
-
33% are receiving public assistance
-
60% of girls become pregnant within 4 years of leaving the foster care system
-
Only 50% will receive a high school diploma; 80% in San Diego County
Each year, nearly 200 youth emancipate from San Diego’s foster care system. In 2007, Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (CAPF) Guardian Scholars offered scholarships to 50 of these former foster youth enrolled in college full-time and working part-time.
